Product Description

Monel K500 is a precipitation-hardened variant of the Monel 400 base composition, modified through addition of aluminum and titanium elements that enable hardening through controlled heat treatment. The base composition maintains the proven 65% nickel-copper foundation, delivering the same exceptional seawater and acid corrosion resistance as standard Monel 400, while the precipitation-hardened structure provides yield strengths two to three times higher than annealed Monel 400.

The precipitation-hardening mechanism in Monel K500 results from careful heat treatment creating fine gamma-double-prime phases within the nickel-copper matrix. This hardening is achieved without loss of ductility, enabling the material to be supplied in both annealed (solution-treated) and aged conditions. The material can be readily machined, fabricated, and formed in the solution-treated condition, then aged to develop final strength properties.

Monel K500 sheet offers the design engineer unprecedented flexibility: corrosion resistance equivalent to Monel 400 combined with strength properties approaching those of many ferrous alloys. This makes the material particularly valuable for critical applications such as pump shafts, impellers, valves, and specialized marine components where material failure cannot be tolerated. The sheet form is ideal for applications requiring coiling, uncoiling, or progressive stamping into complex geometries.

Monel K500 sheet continues to find application in the most demanding marine and offshore projects where conventional materials cannot provide the required combination of strength and corrosion resistance. From deepwater oil and gas production equipment to specialized naval vessel components, from desalination plant equipment to critical chemical processing vessels, Monel K500 sheet delivers the material reliability that separates successful projects from costly failures.

Applications

Offshore Oil and Gas Production Equipment

Critical material for deepwater subsea equipment, manifolds, valve bodies, and connector components where superior seawater corrosion resistance combined with high strength is essential for safety and service reliability in harsh offshore environments.

High-Strength Pump Shafts and Impellers

Specified for seawater pump and compressor shafts, impellers, and casings where the combination of seawater corrosion resistance and elevated mechanical strength eliminates potential fatigue or stress-corrosion cracking failure modes.

Deepwater Connector and Fastener Components

Employed in specialized connector bodies, coupling components, and fasteners for subsea applications where both superior corrosion resistance and mechanical reliability at elevated pressures are non-negotiable requirements.

Specialized Marine Valve Components

Applied in valve bodies, seats, stems, and trim for critical marine isolation and control valves. The material's strength enables compact valve designs while the corrosion resistance ensures reliable operation throughout design service life.

Chemical Processing Equipment with Seawater Cooling

Utilized for process equipment requiring both exposure to aggressive chemicals and seawater cooling. The dual corrosion resistance capability of Monel K500 sheet enables integrated equipment design without need for bi-metallic materials.

Advanced Desalination and Water Treatment Systems

Specified for high-pressure reverse osmosis equipment, brine heaters, and specialized process vessels where high strength combined with seawater corrosion resistance enables efficient, reliable long-term operation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the aging temperature and time for Monel K500 sheet?
Standard aging is performed at 565°C for 16-20 hours. This controlled heat treatment develops the precipitation-hardened structure containing fine gamma-double-prime phases. Some applications may specify over-aging at higher temperatures to optimize fatigue resistance. Detailed specifications are provided with each order.
Can Monel K500 sheet be machined after aging?
Yes, but aged Monel K500 is significantly harder and more difficult to machine than solution-treated material. Machining in the solution-treated condition, followed by aging to develop final properties, is generally more cost-effective. If post-aging machining is necessary, carbide tooling and reduced speeds/feeds are recommended.
How does the corrosion resistance of K500 compare to Monel 400?
Monel K500 exhibits equivalent seawater and acid corrosion resistance to Monel 400 in most environments. However, in certain aggressive environments (particularly high-temperature concentrated acids), the precipitation-hardened structure may exhibit slightly different behavior. Application-specific testing is recommended for critical environments.
Can Monel K500 sheet be cold-worked or stress-relieved?
Cold working is not recommended for aged Monel K500 due to strain-hardening and potential embrittlement. If stress-relief is necessary, re-solution treatment at 980-1040°C followed by re-aging at 565°C restores optimal properties. Hot working above 900°C is possible but should be carefully controlled to preserve grain structure.
What is the typical lead time for Monel K500 sheet?
Standard sizes and thicknesses typically have lead times of 4-6 weeks. Custom thicknesses, widths, or special finishes may require 8-12 weeks. Material produced under special deepwater certifications (NACE, DNV, ABS) may have extended lead times. Contact our sales team for specific availability.
